Last month, Anthology, the owner of the Blackboard LMS, declared bankruptcy. Even as recently as 7 years ago, more schools used Blackboard’s LMS than any other type of LMS. Since then, it has seen a steady decline that has not slowed. Instructure Canvas and D2L Brightspace have picked up almost all the universities that have switched. This fall’s update confirms that existing trends continue with Moodle and Sakai experiencing a slow gradual decline. No “other” LMS has managed to achieve significant growth.

For the past 12 years, Edutechnica has tracked the market share of Learning Management System (LMS) adoption at US higher education institutions.

As is consistent with previous years, LMS market share shifted at a slower pace over the 2024-2025 winter break. Significant IT system changes tend to coincide with the longer amount of time available to migrate over summer break. Also consistent are adoption trends. Instructure Canvas and D2L Brightspace continue to increase in popularity. Blackboard Learn, Moodle, and Sakai continue to decrease. The Sakai LMS in particular appears to have been abandoned by all but a very small handful of remaining institutions. No new entrants of significance were detected.

Of note – and for the very first time – Instructure Canvas has achieved the milestone achievement of having greater market share than its next three competitors combined.
