Each year since 2013, this project has tracked and trended LMS market share for higher education institutions across the US, Australia, Canada, and the UK. This year, as in previous ones, we are sharing our international data for free.
Comparing Geographies
Each of these countries continues to maintain a balance of all of the major LMSs (Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Instructure Canvas, and Moodle) with fewer schools than ever running Sakai or “other” LMSs in any country. Moodle is much more highly favored outside of the US; however US-based Instructure Canvas has started to see significant international adoption this year, surpassing D2L Brightspace in Australia and the UK. Canada-based D2L Brightspace continues to be the most-highly-favored commercial LMS in Canada where Blackboard lost a significant number of institutions following its acquisition of Canada-based WebCT over a decade ago.
Continued Consolidation
While there used to be more variation in previous years, it is clear that the market is consolidating onto Blackboard Learn, D2L Brightspace, Instructure Canvas, and Moodle in every region with no indication of any other LMS gaining any signifiant traction. This trend started many years ago and is especially pronounced outside of the US where the number of schools using an “other” LMS falls into the single digits or zero.
