13th Annual LMS Data Update

The fall 2025 US LMS market share data referenced in this post is available for purchase. Additionally, a complete historical data set of all LMS usage data dating back to 2013 is also available for purchase.

Last month, Anthology, the owner of the Blackboard LMS, declared bankruptcy. Even as recently as 7 years ago, more schools used Blackboard’s LMS than any other type of LMS. Since then, it has seen a steady decline that has not slowed. Instructure Canvas and D2L Brightspace have picked up almost all the universities that have switched. This fall’s update confirms that existing trends continue with Moodle and Sakai experiencing a slow gradual decline. No “other” LMS has managed to achieve significant growth.
